Biography

Dr. Charles Gieschen has been a member of the faculty since 1996. He is a graduate of
CTSFW (MDiv 1984) and completed graduate degrees in New Testament
Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary (ThM 1985) and the University of Michigan
(PhD 1995). During his doctoral studies, he took a six-month sabbatical from his
congregation in 1994 and was a research student at the University of Oxford in
England.

He is an ordained pastor of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) who served
as associate and then senior pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City,
Michigan, from 1985 until being called to CTSFW in 1996.

His first book, Angelomorphic Christology, was published by Brill Academic Press
(1998). He edited a collection of essays entitled The Law in Holy Scripture that was
published by Concordia Publishing House (2004). He is currently writing the Concordia
Commentary volume on 1-2 Thessalonians. He has written, taught, and lectured
extensively as a scholar on the subject of early expressions of Jesus’ divine identity. He
has also authored some popular articles and studies, including Romans in Concordia
Publishing House’s God’s Abiding Word series (2001). He served as the associate
editor of the Seminary’s journal, Concordia Theological Quarterly, from 2006–2024, and
currently serves as the editor.

He has served as provost since 2011. He was one of the seminary faculty
representatives serving on the Commission on Theology and Church Relations of the
LCMS (2007–2016). He is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the
International Enoch Seminar (which focuses on Second Temple Judaism), and the Chief
Academic Officers Society of the Association of Theological Schools.

His marriage to Kristi has been blessed with two children who are married (Stephan and
Megan Gieschen; Lauren and Andrew Fratzke) and one grandchild.
