About the Doctor of Philosophy in Missiology

The Doctor of Philosophy in Missiology (PhD–Miss) program prepares students for mission leadership in academia or the field. It integrates biblical-confessional theology with a study of the social contexts in which Christian witness takes place. It also includes research and reflection on various languages, religious belief systems, cultures, and customs so that graduates can communicate the Gospel faithfully in all its truth and power.

Admission Requirements

Both men and women may apply for the PhD–Miss program. 

  • Master of Divinity (MDiv) or other graduate theological degree from an accredited seminary or equivalent institution.
    • Those with substantial missiological training and experience may be admitted without a degree at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee. 
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Three years of full-time experience in cross-cultural ministry or evangelism.
  • Working knowledge of a field language in which you will do ministry and research. 
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an acceptable TOEFL or DuoLingo English Test score that is fewer than two years old.

A PhD–Miss graduate

  • understands the missiological nature of the Christian faith, the missionary character of the Church, and the individual believer’s place in the mission of God
  • articulates a missiological perspective informed by the Scriptures and Lutheran Confessions
  • addresses a missiological subject from a multidisciplinary perspective
  • pioneers a missiological issue through effective academic writing and thorough study
  • articulates characteristics of a non-Christian religion and formulates a Christian response
  • is competent to teach others
