About the Master of Sacred Theology–Gothenburg
The Master of Sacred Theology (STM–G) program in Gothenburg can lead into a PhD in Theological Studies (PhD–TS). With a focus on research methodology, seminar classes, the learning and use of theological German, and an optional written thesis, the STM–G prepares students for doctoral work or enriches pastoral ministry.
Admission Requirements
Both men and women may apply for the STM–G program.
- Master of Divinity (MDiv) or other graduate theological degree (e.g. European Bachelor of Theology, cand. theol.) from an accredited seminary or equivalent institution
- Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an acceptable TOEFL or DuoLingo English Test score that is fewer than two years old.

Courses are taught in six-day intensives three times a year. Students writing a thesis are required to take 15 hours of credit in systematic theology and 9 hours in the three non-major areas. The non-thesis option requires non-residential students to take a total of 33 hours of credit.
A graduate of the STM–G program
- articulates the nature and function of theology
- formulates, develops, and presents a clear, convincing theological argument
- uses research languages to engage in scholarly research
- makes scholarly contributions to the church
- teaches in ways that are Christ-centered, biblically-based, confessionally Lutheran, and evangelically active
- recognizes that theological study demands a never-ending search for greater understanding
- pursues further graduate study and/or serves the church by teaching the faithful, reaching the lost, and caring for all
